I’ll be about at their London show, if you fancy saying hello.

The band are also supporting the Birthday Suit (solo project of Idlewild guitarist Rod Jones) in Manchester on the 26th of October at the Ruby Lounge.

MP3 of the Day #390: City Reign

By on Wednesday, 31st August 2011 at 10:00 am

City Reign from Manchester have been making quite a few changes. One, they have a new Web site,, which they promise will be filled soon with all sorts of multimedia. (Ooh.) Two, they have a new drummer, Duncan Bolton. Three (this isn’t really a change but instead something to look forward to), they’ve got a new EP coming out in November called ‘Numbers for Street Names’, which will be released on the band’s own Car Boot Records.

Okay, so you’re probably wondering why I’m harping about all this stuff on the MP3 of the Day feature. Just getting to that part. As a special thank you to their devoted fans, they’re giving away their track ‘Anchor’. Download it below.

Single Review: City Reign – Out in the Cold

By on Wednesday, 12th January 2011 at 12:00 pm

It’s been an exciting couple of months for half Northern, half Southern rock band City Reign. The quartet released their first single, ‘Making Plans’ (reviewed on TGTF), last September on their own label, Car Boot Records. Shortly after that they were featured as a ‘New Favourite Band’ on Steve Lamacq’s In the City coverage in Manchester.

Now the band is set to release a new single, ‘Out in the Cold’, at the end of this month, on 31 January. You can listen to the song and watch the related video below, which doesn’t have much to do with the song, but I find funny b/c the train tracks down a hill and kids running down them remind me of catching the train out of Roskilde last summer. Lead singer Chris Bull has an incredible voice, and paired with powerful drums and suitably jaunty guitars, it all comes together for one great song. Definitely keep an eye on these guys. If you happen to be in Manchester on 29 January, stop by at the Ram and Shackle, Fallowfield, where they’re holding their single release party.

‘Out in the Cold’ by City Reign will be released on 31 January on Car Boot Records.

Video of the Moment #384: City Reign

By on Thursday, 4th November 2010 at 6:00 pm

I’ve bee really missing blighty an awful lot, so excuse me having a lump in my throat while I was watching half Manchester, half London band City Reign‘s new video for their song, ‘Sleep Easy’.

The band tells me this videos is culled from footage taken driving to their practise room in Ancoats (queue the remembrance of ‘Ann Coates’, fictional backing singer of the Smiths’ ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’), walking around Northernden (a suburb of Manchester…I had to look this up) and driving down to and gigging in London. It’s a nice little slice of City Reign life.

City Reign have plans to release their next single in January 2011.

Single Review: City Reign – Making Plans

By on Wednesday, 1st September 2010 at 12:00 pm

We get a lot of music submissions. When I popped over to City Reign‘s MySpace to have a listen, the first thing that struck me the first thing that struck me about the page was the great affection the band must have for their instruments, because next to each member’s name and photo is a description of what they each play. (Since starting up with bass guitar a couple weeks ago, I have become increasingly geeky about axes.) As they say, the proof is in the pudding, and after I pressed play, I was impressed with what I heard. Maybe I’m being sentimental, but right now my brain is fixated on the ‘return’ of the Libertines at Reading/Leeds over the weekend, so a band churning out good time rock ‘n’ roll is what I’m looking for these days.

This band is a prime example that except for the people arguing over whose footy squad is better, Man City or Arsenal (insert your favourite teams here), the North and South can play nice together. Chris Bull (lead vocals / guitar) and Michael Grice (guitar) are from London but packed up for Manchester when their previous band broke up. They soon picked up Sam Jones (drums) and convinced Michael Glaze to buy a used bass off eBay and join them.

Interestingly, City Reign formed upon meeting at a Ryan Adams gig (hence the name: it’s a homophone play on words from Adams’s song ‘City Rain, City Streets’), but I am relieved to report they don’t sound like Adams. From my impression anyway, because I’m not a fan of Adams’s music. Their debut single, ‘Making Plans’, couldn’t be a better slice of English city life if it tried. Rain, traffic, traffic lights and the roads that lead to London…it all makes for something very atmospheric. It’s all making me a little ‘homesick’ to be honest! You can watch the promo video for the song at the end of this post. (Okay, not going to lie, I’m disappointed the band aren’t actually in the video.)

The b-side is called ‘Sleep Easy’. When I first gave this a spin, it brought me back to the Bad Lieutenant set at Roskilde last month. I’m really digging the wistful lyrics, powerful guitars and pounding drums.

According to City Reign’s blog, they managed to sell 100 pre-order copies of the single in a mere week from the time they’d announced there was even a pre-order, so either they have very loyal fans or people out there liking what they hear on their MySpace. Or possibly both, which is my best guess. I’m going to keep an eye on these guys. They’ll be playing a few dates in the coming weeks too, which I’ve listed below.

Wednesday 22nd September 2010 – Manchester Moho Live (supporting I Am Arrows)
Friday 24th September 2010 – London New Cross Inn
Monday 27th September 2010 – Fallowfield Ram and Shackle (single release party)
Friday 15th October 2010 – Manchester Retro Bar
Saturday 4th December 2010 – Manchester Roadhouse

‘Making Plans’ by City Reign will be released on 27 September on the band’s own Car Boot Records label.
