WIN / Tix to Original Penguin Plugged In session October 2014 in London starring Peace and Tigercub

By on Tuesday, 23rd September 2014 at 11:00 am

October is just on our doorstep, isn’t it? And with another month comes another fab show courtesy of fashion house Original Penguin, who are putting on another one of their Plugged In sessions at the famed London venue the Hospital Club on the 2nd of October. As we did for the show in June starring Nick Mulvey and THUMPERS and the one in July with Twin Atlantic and We Are Scientists, October’s promises to be a doozy. And yet again, we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away to a lucky TGTF reader! Who’s playing, you ask?

Peace rocked everyone’s world in 2013 with their debut album ‘In Love’. They’ve been working on their follow-up to their best-selling debut, so this will be an incredible chance to see the four-piece not in a massive festival setting but in much more intimate digs.

And if Peace weren’t enough for you, Tigercub from Brighton will also be playing on the night. Described by many as what Nirvana and Sonic Youth might have sounded if they were slightly more pop, they are sure to remind you of the ’90s (if you were alive back then anyway) and will be sure to get toes tapping.

Now, usually the only way into these special shows is if you sign up here at Original Penguin to put your name in for the company’s lucky draw. But as I mentioned before, we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away and we want to give them to a deserving TGTF reader. Keen on winning? Of course you are. Here’s all the details to enter…

In the form below, please fill out your full name and your email address. Then to make sure you really want to see this show (and also to confirm you’re not a robot!), you’ll need to correctly answer this question: What’s the name of Peace’s next single, out on the 28th of September? Get your entries in by noon British time on Thursday the 25th of September. We’ll choose a winner from all the correct entries received and contact him/her by email. Good luck! Please note: this contest is open to UK residents only who can get themselves to London for the show, and the winner and guest must be 18+ or you will be turned away at the door (and we wouldn’t want anyone to be disappointed). All duplicate entries will be discarded.

This contest is now closed and the winner has been contacted by email.

WIN / Tix to Original Penguin Plugged In session July 2014 in London starring We Are Scientists and Twin Atlantic

By on Monday, 30th June 2014 at 11:00 am

Tomorrow is the 1st of July. Another month, another great gig hosted by fashion house Original Penguin at the famed London venue the Hospital Club. Just like the one starring Nick Mulvey and THUMPERS a few short weeks back, this month’s show next Tuesday (the 8th of July) promises to be another great night of music. And we’ve blagged a pair of tickets to the intimate gig to give away to a lucky TGTF reader!

A band that really needs no introduction, Brooklyn-based We Are Scientists will be headlining the proceedings Tuesday night in London. It’s not enough that they write kick-arse songs that stay in your head forever and ever like ‘The Great Escape’, ‘After Hours’ and Rules Don’t Stop’. They’re also extremely funny guys and should you have the luck to win this pair of tickets, you’re in for a rib-tickling night with jokes a-plenty interspersed between the band’s cheeky brand of American rock.

Before We Are Scientists will be Glaswegian band Twin Atlantic, who have been wowing crowds all over the UK for as long as I’ve been involved with TGTF and we started writing about them in 2009 (probably longer). I can only say that their epic rock sound should sound amazing in the cramped confines of the Hospital Club.

Normally, the only way into this special show is if you sign up here at Original Penguin to put your name in for the company’s lucky draw. But as I mentioned before, we’ve got a pair of tickets to give away and we want to give them to a deserving TGTF reader. Keen on winning? Ready, set, go!

First, please fill out your full name and your email address in the form below. Then to make sure you really want to go (and also to confirm you’re not a robot!), you’ll need to correctly answer this question: What band is supporting We Are Scientists on their headline shows in July? (Hint: Dig around We Are Scientists’ official Web site for the answer.) Get your entries in by noon British time on Wednesday the 2nd of July. We’ll choose a winner from all the correct entries received and contact him/her by email. Good luck! Please note: this contest is open to UK residents only who can get themselves to London for the show, and the winner and guest must be 18+ or you will be turned away at the door (and we don’t want anyone to be disappointed). All duplicate entries will be discarded.

This contest is now closed. The winner will be contacted by email.

WIN / Tix to Original Penguin Plugged In session June 2014 in London starring Nick Mulvey and THUMPERS

By on Monday, 9th June 2014 at 11:00 am

Fashion house Original Penguin are hosting a series of intimate (100 capacity) gigs at the famed London venue the Hospital Club, which has played host to the reveal night of the Mercury Prize nominees in past years. This month’s show on Wednesday the 18th of June promises to be a special one and stars two acts on the rise.

Before Nick Mulvey (pictured at top) landed on the BBC Sound of 2014 longlist, our Carrie had written quite a bit about him already here for TGTF and she also caught up with the lovely man for a chat in Austin at SXSW before his appearance at the Communion showcase there Friday night. London’s THUMPERS also made their debut at SXSW this year, wowing audiences all over Austin with their brand of alt-pop.

The only way into this special show is if you sign up here at Original Penguin to put your name in for the company’s lucky draw. Or is it? No, we wouldn’t do that to you, our faithful TGTF readers. We’ve managed to blag two pairs of tickets to the show so two lucky winners and their guests can enjoy the show on us. Fancy your chances? Then complete the form below.

First, we’ll need your full name and your email address. Then to make sure you’re serious about going (and also to confirm you’re not a robot!), you’ll need to correctly answer this question: what is the name of Nick Mulvey’s debut album? (Hint: Carrie mentions the album title in this review from Austin.) Get your entries in by noon British time on Wednesday the 11th of June. We’ll choose two winners from all the correct entries received and contact them by email. Good luck! Please note: this contest is open to UK residents only who can get themselves to London for the show, and the winner and guest must be 18+ or you will be turned away at the door (and we don’t want anyone to be disappointed). All duplicate entries will be discarded.

This contest is now closed. The winners will be contacted by email.

TGTF Holiday Giveaway / WIN a four-album prize pack from Beatnik Geek Records

By on Monday, 9th December 2013 at 3:00 pm

Beatnik Geek Records is an independent record label located 15 miles from London. Formed in 2006, their aim is “to cultivate a self-sustainable business through which artists can release the best records they can possibly produce”. Focusing on bands and individuals who they can work with as a team, Beatnik Geek Records have been very lucky to be working with artists who buy into this methodology and are willing to help the label by working together with them to produce their music, to then give these acts the best possible chance of success.

We’ve featured some of Beatnik Geek’s bands on TGTF, and we were so pleased when they offered to give us the debut albums of four of their acts, Van Susans, Keston Cobblers’ Club, The Lightwings and Melic (pictured at top), so we could in turn give them to a lucky TGTF reader. Whoever wins this treasure trove of four albums will have plenty of music to entertain them and their loved ones during this holiday season and for days to come. To give you a bit more information on the bands and their releases:

Van Susans‘Paused in the Moment’
The Bromley band’s debut was released in 2012, but we recently gave away their latest single, which was a reworked version of the album track ‘Served Cold’. This year the band supported Little Comets at a charity gig in Manchester and played festivals such as Lounge on the Farm, Crystal Palace Garden Party, Victorious in Portsmouth and Galtres Parklands Festival.

Keston Cobblers’ Club‘One, for Words’
Their debut was released in 2012, but they haven’t stopped moving since, having graced Glasto, Green Man and Larmer Tree festivals and also made radio appearances with Bob Harris on Radio 2 and Steve Lamacq on 6music. In June 2013, they released the ‘A Scene of Plenty’ EP.

The Lightwings – ‘Sleeping is Not for Dreamers’
Their debut came out this year but songs from it have already been nicked for the Louise Brealey indie film already making the film festival rounds, Delicious.

Melic – ‘An Hour to Anywhere’
Our Ben caught the band at their launch party for their debut album back in the summer. Despite being a relatively new band in town, they’ve already played high-profile shows at London Koko and Islington Academy, as well as International Pop Overthrow Liverpool, Cornbury, and Southern Sounds festivals.

Want to win? Fill out the contest form below with your full name and your email address. Next, we want to be sure you’re not a robot, so correctly answer this question: what country do Melic originally hail from? Get your entries in by noon British time on Thursday the 12th of December. We’ll choose a winner from all the correct entries received then. Good luck! Please note: this contest is open to UK residents only, as the prize will be posted. To make this fair for everyone, all duplicate entries will be discarded.

This contest is now closed. The winner will be contacted by email.

TGTF Holiday Giveaway / WIN a CD and t-shirt prize pack from the Heartbreaks

By on Wednesday, 4th December 2013 at 4:00 pm

If this interview I did with The Heartbreaks in London back in May is any indication, the band’s second album is shaping up to be in fantastic shape for release in the new year. In October, they revealed new single ‘¡No Pasarán!’, glowingly reviewed by our Martin here. Off the back of the single release excitement and two rammed free shows in Manchester and London in November, the band have two additional dates in January scheduled: Thursday the 23rd of January at London Madame JoJo’s and Saturday the 25th of January at Manchester Deaf Institute.

The lads are in a giving mood this holiday season and we’re pleased to have a Heartbreaks prize pack up for grabs to give to a lucky TGTF reader. The winner will receive a copy of the lads’ debut album ‘Funtimes’ and their choice of either a ‘Fun Times’ or ‘¡No Pasarán!’ t-shirt like the one sported by drummer Joe Kondras below.

Want to win? Fill out the contest form below with your full name and your email address. Then to make sure you’re not a robot, correctly answer this question: what seaside town are the band from? (This is easy, right?) Get your entries in by noon British time on Monday the 9th of December. We’ll choose a winner from all the correct entries received then. Good luck! Please note: this contest is open to UK residents only, as the prize will be posted. To make this fair for everyone, all duplicate entries will be discarded.

This contest is now closed and the winner has been contacted.
