MP3 of the Day #294: Cut Copy

By on Thursday, 10th February 2011 at 10:00 am

To celebrate this week’s release of their fourth studio album, ‘Zonoscope’, Cut Copy wants everyone to have this remix of ‘Take Me Over’ by Brooklyn’s Midnight Magic. It’s a disco take of the Australian band’s more overtly poppy original, and definitely worth a listen and download. It’s time to get down and get funky!

MP3 of the Day #277: Cut Copy

By on Thursday, 23rd December 2010 at 10:00 am

Modular Recordings is offering a free remix mp3 of Cut Copy‘s ‘Take Me Over’. The remix master in this case is none other than DFA Records co-founder, the New York-based, British producer Tim Goldsworthy, who for this remix is going by the name Thee Loving Hand. (I’m a big fan of his remix of Delphic‘s ‘Counterpoint’.)

In this version, as can and should be expected from one of the two great minds that birthed one of the best dance labels of recent history, the song is transformed into a sexy, almost liquid form of music. About 4 minutes in though, the direction shifts towards a more chiptune sound.

You can grab the remix by clicking here. We reviewed ‘Take Me Over’ (the actual single) last month.

Single Review: Cut Copy – Take Me Over

By on Wednesday, 24th November 2010 at 12:00 pm

Melbourne, Australia’s Cut Copy have returned with a new single, ‘Take Me Over’. It’s the first single from their third album, ‘Zonoscope’, due out 07 February 2011 in Europe (and presumably the UK). Admittedly, I don’t know much about Cut Copy, except that many of my friends suggested I check them out when I told them I loved Friendly Fires. With this single, I still don’t see the sonic resemblance, except that Friendly Fires is somewhat tropical on some tracks. Hmmm.

But let’s go back to the Cut Copy single. Maybe this is what the Aussies are looking for their summer – something uncomplicated, something dancey, a pop song that doesn’t require deep thought. It is a lot of fun, and I can see dancing to this under palm trees and one too many little frou frou drinks with umbrellas…but it’s just too simple for me for me to be enchanted by the effort. And is it just me, or is there a definite Men at Work ‘Down Under’ vibe? Weird. Have a listen below and see if you agree or disagree.

‘Take Me Over’ is available digitally now, and their Australian label Modular Recordings (who also have Delphic and Yeah Yeah Yeahs on their roster) say a 12″ single will follow soon.
