Live Gig Video: Bob Dylan performs ‘The Night We Called It a Day’ on penultimate Late Show with David Letterman

By on Wednesday, 20th May 2015 at 4:00 pm

Tonight will be the last broadcast ever of the Late Show with David Letterman, whose show has been graced by the likes of acts we’ve covered here on TGTF including Glass Animals, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Hozier, Real Estate and Arctic Monkeys, just to name a few. To many of us, especially those of us on the overworked, neurotic East Coast of America, Letterman was who we chose to while our late night hours with, have a laugh with and check out which band he’d have as a guest.

When has Bob Dylan not been difficult and crochety? I guess even the end of a major era in American late night telly didn’t sway the ageing singer/songwriter legend from changing his usual ways, as he appeared on Letterman’s show last night, confusingly not playing any one of his many personally penned hits but instead choosing to perform ‘The Night We Called It a Day’, an old standard that appears on Dylan’s new Frank Sinatra tribute album ‘Shadows in the Night’. Anyway, just watch it below and be amused as much with the ending as I was.

Live Gig Video: Glass Animals perform mega hit ‘Gooey’ on David Letterman

By on Friday, 27th February 2015 at 4:00 pm

The speed of Glass Animals‘ train doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. After sufficiently creeping us out last week with the new promo for ‘Black Mambo’ and the Oxford band’s most recent UK live appearance last Sunday at the 6Music Festival 2015 in Newcastle, they jetted back to the States.

In New York City, they played a one-off intimate show for fans on Tuesday night at the Box in the Lower East Side, which they then followed with this performance of their mega hit ‘Gooey’ on the venerated Ed Sullivan Theater stage for Late Night with David Letterman Wednesday. They brought their full jungle kit, which naturally host Dave couldn’t help but joke with the band’s Dave about needing some ferns for his digs. Watch it below.

Glass Animals‘ next UK tour begins Monday in Cambridge.

Live Gig Video: Catfish and the Bottlemen make their American tv debut, performing ‘Kathleen’ on David Letterman

By on Friday, 9th January 2015 at 4:00 pm

Having already made plenty of waves back home in the UK, Welsh band Catfish and the Bottlemen marked a major milestone last night. They made their American late night tv debut appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman in New York City, playing their hit single ‘Kathleen’ from 2014 album fan favourite ‘The Balcony’. Watch the performance below.

Live Gig Video: Hozier performs ‘Take Me to Church’ on David Letterman

By on Wednesday, 14th May 2014 at 4:00 pm

One of the most talked about artists from SXSW 2014 off his appearance at the Communion showcase on Friday night, Hozier, appeared on Late Night with David Letterman last night, which marked the Irish artist’s American network television debut. Watch him perform single and title track to earlier EP ‘Take Me to Church’ below.

Carrie reviewed his more recent release, the ‘From Eden’ EP’, here; it’s out now on Rubyworks.

Live Gig Video: Real Estate play ‘Talking Backwards’ on David Letterman

By on Friday, 11th April 2014 at 4:00 pm

This past Wednesday, Brooklyn rockers Real Estate appeared on American late night talk show David Letterman to perform ‘Talking Backwards’. The song is featured on the group’s current album ‘Atlas’, out now on Domino. Watch the performance below.

MP3 of the Day (and more!) #811: Arctic Monkeys

By on Tuesday, 11th February 2014 at 10:00 am

I’m a big Beatles fan but even I am getting sick of all this 50th anniversary stuff about the Fab Four’s first visit to American shores and their first American television appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Initially, I would have thought Arctic Monkeys taking this momentous Fabs’ anniversary and playing a cover of one of their songs was a mere publicity stunt. However, when you listen to Alex Turner and co.’s rendering of ‘All My Loving’ – incidentally, one of the songs that the Beatles played on that Ed Sullivan broadcast – at their recent sold out show at New York’s venerated Madison Square Garden, they gave the classic track their own edge by slowly it down massively. Listen to and download the live mp3 from Stereogum here.

As for the ‘more’ aspect of this post, for a little more tangentially related content, Arctic Monkeys performed on the Late Show with David Letterman last month, in the same location that the Beatles did 50 years ago, now dubbed the Ed Sullivan Theater. This live version of ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ is as sneery and swaggery as you might expect. Watch it below.
