Best Of 2008: Albums

It’s been a pretty amazing year for music around the UK, and following on from my top 10 of 2007, here is my top 10 of 2008.

Viva Stereo (roar lion roar album cover)10 – Viva Stereo – Roar Lion Roar
You’ve probably not heard much about this Scottish collective. However, their third album was a surprise favourite for me – anthemic, accessible, slightly My Bloody Valentine and yet still so gorgeous.

Read more about Viva Stereo here.

Favourite: Knee High Boots.

9 – Sigur RósMeð suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust
As ever, an amazing collection from the Icelandic group. More pop than previous albums, their songs sound all the more amazing. I caught them live at Hydro Connect Festival in Scotland, where they preceded Franz Ferdinand and blew them out of the water. As the sun went down, they soundtracked the festival for us, showing their sense of humour and making beautiful music that had more than a few grown men in tears.

Favourite: Inní mér syngur vitleysingur

8 – Ra Ra RiotThe Rhumb Line
Dark in places, Ra Ra Riot come from the same school of musical geekiness as Vampire Weekend, but with a bit more serious and a bit less money. Dark in places, the group are still recovering from the death of their drummer in summer 2007, which shows on tracks like “Winter ’05”.

Favourite: Dying is Fine

New album news from Delays, Get Cape and REM

By on Sunday, 10th February 2008 at 7:28 pm

Now, we all know that I go on and on and on about one of my favourite bands, Delays. They’ve already announced a new tour starting this Thursday in Wolverhampton, and now they’ve announced the release dates for their lead single and album release. “Everything’s The Rush” will be released on Monday 28th April around the UK, with lead single “Hooray” being out a week before on Monday 21st April. The album will be their first for Fiction records, and will hopefully be their breakthrough effort. There’s a preview of Hooray on their myspace page now, and their blog entry announcing their album dates is here.

R.E.M. LiveMeanwhile, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. has a new album, “Searching For The Hows And Whys” out on 10th March. I knew that 21 year old Sam Duckworth had a new album out in the early half of this year, but not this soon, so this makes me very happy. The tracks are sounding good – get a free download of Find The Time here. The video is here for those of you that are a bit more visually inclined.

Finally, there’s been a lot of hype about R.E.M.‘s return around the blogoshphere this week, with Accelerate being announced as arriving on 31st March here in the UK. First single “Supernatural Superserious” sounds pretty good – a return to their rocky roots, and a definite positive step forward from their rather weak “Around The Sun”.

Expect to hear a lot more about each of these three albums over the  coming weeks here on There Goes The Fear.

Delays bounce back with new album and EP

DelaysBrace yourselves. You’re going to be hearing a lot about this band from me over the coming weeks and months. Delays, my favourite band, have announced details of a new album and EP that have been a year in the making.

Everythings The Rush” is the new album which looks set to be released early 2008 and as a taster for the album a five track EP “Love Made Visible” will be released on October 22nd. The tracklisting looks promising – even the track names sound like they’ll be anthems already.

1. Love Made Visible
2. You See Colours
3. We Together Make A City
4. Love Made Visible (Torch Team remix)
5. Slow Burn.

There’s also an exclusive interview over at The Mag, which is full of suprises – as one person on the Delays forum mentioned, it’s all about “Elton John, Nudity & Watersports…” Trust me, its better than the mental images you’ve got in your head right now!
