Interview: Flamboyant Bella

By on Wednesday, 16th September 2009 at 12:00 pm

We introduced talented rising stars Flamboyant Bella last week, and following our post were fortunate enough to get Flo to answer some of our questions…

Hello Flamboyant Bella. Who are you, and what are you up to today?
We be James, Flo, Elliot, and Mitch.. All the boys are busy doing fun things, like being in Korea, so you’re stuck with I, Flo, today. I’m about to go out and do some shopping actually…

On the subject of songwriting – how does it start for you? Lyrical concept? A riff? A drug fuelled orgy?
James writes the majority or our songs. He’s a lyrical G, so he just writes about stuff that’s happened to him, then we get together and arrange it… I think inspiration so far has mainly been gay clubs, debauched parties, and a bit of sex here and there.

Who would you say are your biggest influences at the moment?
Influences… I’m unable to concentrate on writing anything at the moment, due to a ridiculous obsession with Derren Brown. It’s becoming unhealthy…

Before going on stage, do you have any rituals?
Going for a pee. It’s essential, or I just spend the whole set thinking about my bladder.

What’s one thing you try to do as a group reguarly?
Crochet club.

We’re five years down the line. You’re massive. You’re playing arenas around the country. What’s the Flamboyant Bella live show like?
They’ll have invented us some Transformers outfits. We’ll play our instruments from inside them, whilst having a huge battle with lasers… underwater.

What would be a cool location you’d like to do a gig at?
We recently played an acoustic set on a bus.. that was odd.. I’d quite like to play in a fish and chip shop. I think Badly Drawn Boy did it… I like the idea of munching on a battered sausage whilst playing a few tracks…

Finally, what music, books and TV / films are you really enjoying at the moment?
I’m just about to start an Iain Banks book… The Wasp Factory was brilliant, so I’m hoping for this to continue in his other works… I saw Natural Born Killers the other day… that changed my life- for better or worse, I’m not sure, but I’m obsessing over it. Music-wise, Calvin Harris’ new album- he’s a clever one! I’m a big ‘Jackson and his Computer Band’ fan though… I recommend them, highly.

Bands to Watch #132: Flamboyant Bella

By on Friday, 11th September 2009 at 12:00 pm

Flamboyant Bella (side)They say:
Flamboyant Bella are four teenagers who hail from Hitchin in Hertfordshire and are all unbelievably aged between 17 and 19. Already amassing a staggering 2 million hits on Myspace, its easy to see how they’ve managed to complete three tours of the UK and have no problem selling out venues with out even the hint of a release up to this point.

James McBreen knows how to write effortlessly memorable riffs and combines the composition with witty, insightful tales of a capricious youth. Front women and guitarist Flo Citron’s stunning looks are matched by her equally attractive and distinct vocals, fusing effortlessly with James to make an engaging duo. Completing the quartet are talented musical brothers Mitch on bass and Doreen on drums who provide the perfect rhythm section

We Say:
Like a more “street” version of (other TGTF favourites) Defend Moscow, Flamboyant Bella certainly are flamboyant, fun and funky. Energetic, they sound like a bizarre mixture between Kylie, Girls Aloud, Jamie T and Kid British (who they’re off on tour with in October) that will have you moving in your seat like there’s no tomorrow. Make sure you watch these guys – they’re a lot of fun and should be doing good things in the future if there’s any justice.

You Say:
Watch the video for their forthcoming single, “Get A Reaction” which is out in about 10 days time on 21st September.
