Single Review: City Reign – Out in the Cold

By on Wednesday, 12th January 2011 at 12:00 pm

It’s been an exciting couple of months for half Northern, half Southern rock band City Reign. The quartet released their first single, ‘Making Plans’ (reviewed on TGTF), last September on their own label, Car Boot Records. Shortly after that they were featured as a ‘New Favourite Band’ on Steve Lamacq’s In the City coverage in Manchester.

Now the band is set to release a new single, ‘Out in the Cold’, at the end of this month, on 31 January. You can listen to the song and watch the related video below, which doesn’t have much to do with the song, but I find funny b/c the train tracks down a hill and kids running down them remind me of catching the train out of Roskilde last summer. Lead singer Chris Bull has an incredible voice, and paired with powerful drums and suitably jaunty guitars, it all comes together for one great song. Definitely keep an eye on these guys. If you happen to be in Manchester on 29 January, stop by at the Ram and Shackle, Fallowfield, where they’re holding their single release party.

‘Out in the Cold’ by City Reign will be released on 31 January on Car Boot Records.

WIN / See Patti Smith in Conversation with Author Geoff Dyer, in London

By on Tuesday, 11th January 2011 at 11:00 am

We have a pair of tickets to give away to see Patti Smith, legendary American singer/songwriter, in conversation with award-winning author Geoff Dyer. The event takes place on Tuesday, the 25th of January, at the Royal Geographical Society in London. She will be discussing her life, work and passions and no doubt will touch upon her 2010 memoir, ‘Just Kids’.

To be entered for this competition for the pair of tickets, simply leave your name and email address (so we can contact you if you’ve won), and answer the question, “what is the name of Patti Smith’s long-time guitarist who accompanied her at a special opening ceremony at Roskilde Festival in 2010?” (If you need help with the question, have a read of our Roskilde coverage from last year.) This contest is now closed and the winner will be contacted shortly.
