MP3 of the Day #123: Marina and the Diamonds (Starsmith Remix)

By on Monday, 16th November 2009 at 10:00 am

Okay, okay, we LOVE Marina and the Diamonds here at TGTF. To go with this, I’ve got a blossoming love for Starsmith, the South London remixer who has taken the likes of Katy Perry, Little Boots, Passion Pit, Paloma Faith, Boy Crisis, the Twang and his mentor and fellow south Londoner, Frankmusik, and turned gems into diamonds.

This time he’s taken Marina and the Diamonds’ glorious I Am Not A Robot and made it positively sparkle.

Starsmith will be doing a DJ set before each of Frankmusik’s UK shows at the start of December, so if you’re contemplating going along, make sure you get there early, meanwhile Marina and the Diamonds plays this Wednesday’s Levi’s Ones to Watch at London Hoxton’s Bar and Grill.

Download, listen and enjoy.

Following on from the amazing lineups of the past two years, the Mencap Little Noise sessions are back again this November to raise more money for the mental disability charity.

The lineup is almost complete, with a string of pretty amazing performances scheduled. Personally, I’m most excited about Editors day, along with the pop-tastic Alexandra Burke, Mika and Newton Faulkner days – all of the shows have great talent and with the promise of special guests, I say you should hop on down to Union Chapel to check out some great music. Head on over to the Little Noise Sessions website for more answers to your questions.

Marina and the Diamonds – Mowgli’s Road

The very talented Marina and her Diamonds have made this simple yet bizarre video featuring paper legs for the new single, Mowgli’s Road (that Jess reviewed last week). Watch, enjoy, and download some great MP3s below.

In the Post #32: Marina and the Diamonds – Mowgli’s Road

By on Wednesday, 21st October 2009 at 12:00 pm

TGTF have been fans of Marina and the Diamonds for quite some time now. I even prefer her, quite frankly, to Florence and Machine, the fellow fiery-voiced female getting all the attention at the moment.

However, Miss. Marina hasn’t been doing too bad for herself of late. Live, she’s been spotted everywhere from Glastonbury to Reading festival, and she’s literally just got off the road from NME’S Radar Tour alongside Golden Silvers, Local Natives and Yes Giantess. On top of all that, next month shall see the Welsh singer release her first single with a major label, Warner Music Groups’ 679 Recordings.

Titled ‘Mowgli’s Road’, Marina’s upcoming offering is a 3 minute shot of kooky pop, filled with mystical ‘cuckoos!’, whistles, and creepy vocals. Zig-zagging synths gyrate in the distance of the verses, as Marina’s velvety rich voice recites fantastically odd lyrics over the top (“Ten silver spoons coming after me/One life with one dream on repeat/I’ll escape if I try hard enough/Till King of Jungle calls my bluff.”). The bridge slash chorus is similarly zany – a primitive soundscape of excitable harmonies and pounding drums. Think tribal-chant come soulful-electro. Yes, quite a combination – and quite a song!

Check out a live rendition of Marina and the Diamonds’ ‘Mowgli’s Road’ at the BBC, below:
