Uber-cool dance duo Monarchy have had an exciting 2017. Back in June, they unveiled a new single, the absolute banger ‘Hula Hoop 8000’. Last month, to their complete surprise, the London-based pair originally from Australia won a Los40 Trending Award in Spain. Well deserved, I might add. What might their final big thing for 2017 is the release, finally, of the promo video for ‘Hula Hoop 8000’, produced by CANADA.
The song itself is a celebration of love and light, and the promo video extends this feeling into tongue-in-cheek territory, straight from a call centre. It reminds me of the Two Door Cinema Club video for ‘Are We Ready? (Wreck)’, satirising consumerism. In this video, Monarchy are in the business, with some leggy models, to selling products you might not actually need. But in true advertising fashion, their business is trying to sell you the products and as anyone familiar with the music business know, sex sells, right? Ha. Watch the video for ‘Hula Hoop 8000’ below, which actually features a neon version of its namesake. The details for the next Monarchy album are purported to be released in January. Sometimes less is more when it comes to electronic music. I’d say that’s definitely the case with ‘Fractured World’, from Monarchy‘s latest and crowd-funded album ‘Abnocto’, which was released last month on the London via Oz electronic duo’s own Hacan Records. While the song lacks the sexy edge that ‘Dancing in the Corner’ revealed to us in January, ‘Fractured World’ buzzes along, the lyrics against the melody’s tempered freneticism, while the promo takes advantage of the reds, oranges and blacks of Russian constructivism in a tangram display. Watch the video below.

Being a music editor, I’m always on the lookout for brand new bands, so there is a constant shifting and clearing out in my mind of acts that have gone off the radar, as we all know that bands may break up and/or real life may intrude and we never hear from them again, or at least not in the form we remember them in. So when bands return – or in the case of London-based electro duo Monarchy, make a great big noise ahead of a new release – it’s so nice to reminded that a band you liked a lot before is still around making awesome music.
Monarchy’s second album and follow-up to 2011’s ‘Around the Sun’ was financed by this ongoing Pledgemusic campaign, and now the duo are pleased to announce that ‘Abnocto’ will see the light of day on the 9th of March on their own label Hacan Sounds. Watch below for the LP’s first taste, this snappy, sexy little synth number ‘Dancing in the Corner’.

We’ve got a stripped back acoustic version of Monarchy‘s ‘You Don’t Want to Dance With Me’ featuring Britt Love, and it just goes to show you don’t need all the fancy bells and whistles to come up with real emotion in music. It’s absolutely lovely. And free to add to your music collection. Listen to it and download it below.

Monarchy‘s bass player Vivien did a remix of their upcoming single, ‘You Don’t Want to Dance with Me’, and the band want to give it away to you for free. It’s another remix in a line of them, including the Bondax one we shared with you about a fortnight ago as a previous MP3 of the Day here. This one has an old school, Lauryn Hill ‘That Thing’ kind of vibe.

Monarchy‘s next single ‘You Don’t Want to Dance With Me’ (featuring Britt Love) will be released on the 24th of October. In celebration of this release, the duo are offering up Bondax‘s remix of the tune, which has sped up and glitched up the beats of the original. Monarchy have a new promo video for their single, which you can watch below and compare to Bondax’s treatment. Enjoy both below.
