Video of the Moment #1987: M. Ward

By on Friday, 15th January 2016 at 6:00 pm

Portland, Oregon singer/songwriter/producer M. Ward will be releasing his 8th album in March, and this time, he’s fully embracing the weather of his hometown in his new album’s title. The press release for ‘More Rain’ quips, “Ward has made a true gotta-stay-indoors, rainy-season record that looks upwards through the weather while reflecting on his past”. Ha. His new single ‘Girl from Conejo Valley’ (Conejo Valley being a location west of Los Angeles, oddly) now has its own music video. Naturally, it was filmed (or at least appears to be) in the place in the song’s name, and it stars an unusual, motley series of characters – including a laser-y red-eyed rabbit – to visually tell the song’s story. Watch the video below.

‘More Rain’ will be released on the 4th of March on Merge Records and will include collaborations with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, Neko Case, k.d. lang, The Secret Sisters and Joey Spampinato of NRBQ.

Video of the Moment #1011: M. Ward

By on Friday, 19th October 2012 at 6:00 pm

M. Ward (the male half of She and Him pictured above) has released his latest video, for song ‘Me and My Shadow’. In it, the life of a Justin Bieber lookalike is chronicled…and it looks like he sold his soul to a scary looking, devilish old woman. But not all is lost; the ending leaves the story at a cliffhanger that I’m guessing might continue in M. Ward’s next video. Watch it below.

M. Ward (1/2 of She and Him, he’s pictured on the left of course) has a new video for ‘The First Time I Ran Away’. This is the first song to be released to the public from his forthcoming album ‘A Wasteland Companion’, due out this spring. Beautiful animation.

In the Post #81: She and Him – The Christmas Waltz

By on Friday, 14th October 2011 at 12:00 pm

We’re already collecting band names for the 10 for 2012 poll. (Vote here.) But in case you weren’t sure we were getting closer to the end of 2011, here’s something else: news of She and Him‘s ‘A Very She and Him Christmas’ album. If you have ever seen the film ‘Elf’, you will recall Zooey Deschanel’s beautiful a capella version of ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ that bounces off the bathroom tiles. Thankfully, the song is one of the 12 tracks on the third album from Deschanel and her partner in crime M. Ward.

But let’s turn our attention to the album’s first teaser and opening track, ‘The Christmas Waltz’. Like the previously described Elf one-off performance, this song takes advantage of Deschanel’s clear, controlled voice and pairs it simply with spare guitar and a few notes on the piano that come in later. When you’ve got talent like that, that’s all you need, really. (How is it possible that one woman can be such a good actress and can sing well? So not fair.)

As a rule, I don’t like Christmas songs: I think they’re too sentimental and cheesy. But if you’ve got to have someone serenading you to get you in the holiday mood, I can’t imagine anyone better than Zooey Deschanel to do the honours. (I’m also guessing that if you preorder this album for your girlfriend, you’ll probably get some kind of “present” later on in the holiday season. Just saying…)

‘A Very She and Him Christmas’ will be released on the 31st of October on Domino. You can preorder yours from Domino here.
