Preview: Reading and Leeds 2011

By on Thursday, 24th March 2011 at 11:00 am

One of the most highly-anticipated music festivals in the UK is returning to Richfield Avenue and Bramham Park this summer. Yep, it’s Reading and Leeds, held during the August bank holiday weekend.

Apart from the headliners, this year’s line-up looks not too different from the one from last year. The Strokes, who have just released their new album ‘Angles’ (TGTF review here), seem to be one of the biggest names this year. Elbow will be a blast as well as they will no doubt play tracks from ‘build a rocket boys!’ Other headliners include Muse (pictured above), My Chemical Romance, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Pulp and Interpol.

Let’s move on to the NME/ Radio 1 stage, the stage I’m most interested in. Metronomy and Patrick Wolf will definitely be highlights. I personally think that Reading’s second day on the NME stage line up is the best for Ilike all the bands playing; I’m particularly looking forward to Everything Everything’s performance, and Kiwis the Naked and Famous are going to be fun to watch as well. Other great acts include Noah and the Whale, White Lies, Crystal Castles, Bombay Bicycle Club, Warpaint, Chapel Club and Cage the Elephant.

The Festival takes place on the August Bank Holiday weekend – Friday 26th to Sunday 28th August 2011. The tickets are available from SeeTickets (0870 060 3775). As for purchasing in person, tickets are available at the following 3 HMV stores: Reading Oracle, Southampton (weekend tickets only) and Oxford (weekend tickets only). Tickets are £199.50 for the weekend and £89.50 per day.

The line-up as announced so far is after the cut.

This Week’s Gonzo – Alexa is joined by Good Charlotte, My Chemical Romance and Hurts

By on Friday, 4th March 2011 at 11:00 am

On this week’s edition of MTV Gonzo, two heavy hitters of the American rock scene, Good Charlotte and My Chemical Romance, both come by for a chat with Alexa. Also stopping in to the brown couch are band of the moment Hurts to talk about their recent successes. When asked about his immaculate hair, Hurts’ Theo Hutchcraft answered, “my hair is made of Lego – I click it off at night otherwise it spins around”. Haha.

What else is on Friday’s show? MTV Brand New for 2011 winners Mona provide a bluffer’s guide, and new music from Plan B and Radiohead gets a spin. It all happens tonight on MTV Gonzo.

MTV Gonzo airs tonight (Friday) at 7 PM on MTV Music, with a repeat at 8 PM on MTV Rocks.

Series 2 of MTV’s Gonzo to Premiere Friday Night (25 February)

By on Thursday, 24th February 2011 at 11:00 am

Following on from the success of the first series, Alexa Chung returns tomorrow night as the host of series 2 of MTV’s Gonzo. Alexa has called this show “her dream job”, and who wouldn’t, really? On each episode, she’ll be revealing her ‘Top 3’ things rocking her world that week – anything from brand new bands, gadgets, books, films, whatever cool stuff that’s on her mind. And every week she gets to meet a load of exciting music and popular culture personalities and gets to ask them the kinds of questions you won’t ever hear on any other chat shows. Of course, the success of Gonzo rests in your hands, as a centrepiece of these unusual q&a sessions is the Gonzola, a tombula filled full of questions from people like you. These personalities also get to weigh in and stump for their favourite new and emerging talent; for example, in the last series Bloc Party frontman-gone-solo Kele did just that.

But wait. A music show wouldn’t be a music show with live performances, and Gonzo will continue to showcase up and coming talent performing stripped down, acoustic versions. In addition to these exclusive to Gonzo performances, a Video of the Week, plucked straight from the MTV playlist, as well as a Director’s Cut feature allowing bands to walk us through their latest visual creations will be on every episode of Gonzo.

We’ve been told that the famed Gonzo sofa has been “slightly soiled” and to ‘blame Mark Ronson” – not going to touch that one. But we will venture that pants wetting may occur when you consider the guests that have already been confirmed for this second season of Gonzo: the recently returned Foo Fighters, Jessie J, Good Charlotte, Beady Eye, My Chemical Romance and comedian Russell Howard. Quite exciting.

Catch the first ep of series 2 tomorrow night (Friday) at 7 PM on MTV Music, with a repeat at 8 PM on MTV Rocks.

Video of the Moment #349: My Chemical Romance

By on Thursday, 25th November 2010 at 6:00 pm

My Chemical Romance act out their post-apocalyptic vision in their new video for ‘Sing’. And when I say ‘apocalyptic’, I mean it. Kind of disturbing, but this is the second in a line of video ‘episodes’ for their new album, ‘Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys’, now available. (Oh, and if you were wondering, this video was co-directed by MCR frontman Gerard Way.)

This Week’s Gonzo – rising star rapper Devlin and Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith check in with Alexa

By on Thursday, 11th November 2010 at 12:00 pm

If you haven’t heard of Devlin, you soon will. Alexa Chung welcomes the up-and-coming rapper to the studio and he also graces the Gonzo stage to perform a cover of the Jam classic ‘A Town Called Malice’.

For you Doctor Who fanatics out there – and I know you are out there! – current Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith comes by the show to chat with Alexa about time and space. But the conversation does go into music, as when prompted, Matt Smith said, “if I could be anyone in the world, I’d be Thom Yorke“. I’d have never have guessed he was a Radiohead fan. There’s bound to be other interesting tidbits in this chat.

MTV Gonzo also has you covered on the video front. Marple’s Egyptian Hip Hop will give a exclusive commentary to the director’s cut of their new video. And the show goes behind the scenes of the new My Chemical Romance promo as well.

Watch this week’s MTV Gonzo tomorrow night, Friday, at 7 pm on MTV Rocks, with a repeat at 9 pm on MTV.
