Live Gig Video: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds play ‘AKA…What a Life’ for Conan O’Brien

Noel Gallagher and his touring band took to Conan O’Brien’s late night show in the States last month to play current single ‘AKA…What a Life’. Disappointingly, there was no accompanying interview (and therefore no ensuing Liam bashing), but the performance should get you warmed up if you got a highly prized ticket to one of Noel’s UK arena shows in February. (Tickets to his spring North American theatre dates are still available.)

Single Review: Noel Gallagher – The Death of You and Me

Even though the quality of Oasis‘ recorded output resembles something of a downward ski-slope, only the most cynical of observers would deny Noel Gallagher’s position as one of the most influential songwriters of the modern age. However, just as crucial to the success of Oasis was Liam Gallagher’s vocal, adding an injection of attitude to whatever his brother put in front of him to sing. In ‘The Death of You and Me’, teaser single from the forthcoming album of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, we discover whether Noel’s songs can survive the loss of their greatest interpreter.

A mid-tempo, bombastic almost-ballad, here Noel is pondering the virtues of chucking in the conventional life we live for others, and scrambling off on a new, independent adventure, presumably with a willing companion. His smooth vocal works pretty well here, with little in the way of power, but displaying a yearning quality that suits the material. A lovely Dixieland-style instrumental kicks in halfway through, complete with the obligatory mindless Beatles rip-off, this time the two-bar melodic device from the end of the chorus in ‘Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite’.

Not a bad effort, overall. The sentiment is strong, the melodies ditto. This isn’t going to set the world alight, and is essentially just acoustic pop music rather than the game-changer that was Oasis, but presentable enough given the expectations. Relief all round then that Noel hasn’t dropped a clanger.

7/10

‘The Death Of You And Me’ single will be released through Noel’s own Sour Mash Records label on the 21st of August (digital) and the 22nd of August (7″ and CD). All formats come with exclusive B-side ‘The Good Rebel’. The band’s eponymous debut album will drop on 17 October.

It’s only the 5th day of the month but I bet you music lovers, with your ears close to the ground, were already wondering where exactly the Gallegher brothers monthly druel was coming from?

I hate to put a downer on things but hasn’t this list already been written…One Million times?

The list was found on the official Oasis blog, where Noel states, “This means the Top 10 bands of all time. No solo artists allowed. No female artists allowed. No collectives allowed (Public Enemy etc.).

I think we could have all guessed the first one:

1: The Beatles
2: The Rolling Stones
3: The Who
4: Sex Pistols
5: The Kinks
6: The La’s
7: Pink Floyd
8: The Bee Gees
9: The Specials
10: (Peter Green’s) Fleetwood Mac

Well there you have it, another version of the Top 10 greatest bands and I know what your thinking!  No Led Zeppelin!
