Video of the Moment #2772: Pulled Apart by Horses

By on Friday, 27th January 2017 at 6:00 pm

Leeds rockers Pulled Apart by Horses are gearing up to release their fourth album – yes, really! – in 2017. ‘The Haze’ is scheduled for release on the 17th of March on Caroline International. While they’ve already made available a stream for the title track (yes, it’s loud), this week the punks have a new promo video from the upcoming LP.

As you might have guessed, ‘Hotel Motivation’ sees the band laying waste to their temporary house of lodging, with the other occupants annoyed with the noise. It conjures up memories of the good ol’ days of Chateau Marmont-styled debauchery, so it’s rather interesting the origin of this track. Guitarist James Brown says, “this foot stomper came to life from a shared love of Iggy Pop and an overwhelming lack of sleep when Tom was up night and day penning song lyrics. We hope you enjoy your stay!” Ha. Watch the new music video for ‘Hotel Motivation’ below. Catch the band on tour at the end of March into April at one of their previously announced list of dates. Single Review: Pulled Apart by Horses – Lizard Baby

By on Tuesday, 19th August 2014 at 12:00 pm

Warning: this video contains big riffs, sordid sexy bass chugs and a screech or two.

Oh, and something about a horrid afterbirth-y creature with a hairpiece on, which starts breathing. But ignore that.

The video to Pulled Apart By Horses’ ‘Lizard Baby’ has dominated a lot of the chatter in the build-up the single’s eventual release in September. What the fuss is about is particularly beyond me. But perhaps seeing as I have done a stint at Zoo Magazine and worked with the ex-Production Editor of Bizarre, it takes a little more than usual to see me regurgitating last night’s roast dinner. The new single is a turnaround from their last album’s opening single, the aural bombardment that is ‘V.E.N.O.M.’

‘Lizard Baby’ seems like a far more measured approach from a band with a far grungier look than they’ve ever had, in their short career. After a thudding bass roll that continues throughout, the song introduces Tom Hudson, and then the band delves into more composed territory than we’ve ever seen before from Pulled Apart by Horses. A band known for the frenetic pace and incredibly pacey riffs have moved into Pixies-esque territory.

It’s far more melodic than the short, sharp bursts of frantic alternative rock we’ve come to expect from the band, with a Nirvana ‘Heart Shaped Box’-tinged vibe. Undeniably, it’s a headbanger throughout – the riffs are colossal and it builds to an enormous crescendo, with some classic Horses’ screeching. Whether it’s a warning shot as to what we can expect on the 1st of September, when their third album ‘Blood’ is also released, I’m less sure. But I sense perhaps these young ruffians from Leeds have decided to steer away from singing songs about how they ‘Punched a Lion in the Throat’ towards a more Foo Fighters’ Radio 1-friendly rock. It doesn’t seem like the boys have lost any of their edge; the wildly bizarre video is testament to that.

Let’s just hope these horses haven’t been tamed by the prospect of the Radio 1 A-listing and Fearne Cotton’s warm bosom.

‘Lizard Baby’, Pulled Apart by Horses’ next single, is out on the 1st of September, the same day their third album ‘Blood’ will be released.

Live Gig Video: Pulled Apart by Horses play acoustic ‘V.E.N.O.M.’ at Welcome to the Village festival

By on Thursday, 7th August 2014 at 4:00 pm

The style of Pulled Apart by Horses‘ hard-hitting music doesn’t really lend itself to an acoustic treatment, does it? Until now. Last month at the Welcome to the Village festival near Leeuwarden, Holland, the band recorded this uncharacteristically toned down, acoustic version of otherwise usually cacophonous ‘V.E.N.O.M.’, their first ever in their career.

They must have liked this stripping back of their songs so much, they’ll be having a special acoustic show in their hometown of Leeds on the 29th of August at the Brudenell Social Club to launch their third album, ‘Blood’, out on the 1st of September. Also premiering that night (and following fellow Yorkshire bands The Crookes and Reverend and the Makers) will be the band’s own beer, also called Blood. It’s a pale ale concoction being produced by the West Yorkshire Revolutions Brewery and it’s made with blood oranges (naturally) and Yorkshire Tea (quite).

You can’t buy tickets to this very special show. Tickets will only available to competition winners who post a photo on Twitter and Instagram of them enjoying their favourite drink with the hashtag #PABHsBlood. Those with the best shots and who are over the age of 18 will win a pair of tickets to come to the band’s very first acoustic show.

Video of the Moment #1519: Pulled Apart By Horses

By on Tuesday, 13th May 2014 at 6:00 pm

Pulled Apart By Horses bring back their trademark riffage and guttural screams in the promo video for new single ‘Hot Squash’ out the 23rd of June. The song is taken from their new album ‘Blood’ that will be released on the 1st of September on Sony. The video itself has a haunted house / Fiona Apple ‘Criminal’ type quality. Watch it below.
