Live Gig Video: watch Dermot Kennedy’s Tiny Desk Concert at NPR

To say Irish lad Dermot Kennedy made a splash at SXSW 2018 this year would be an understatement. The Dubliner blends two seemingly disparate worlds – that of the hip-hoppers and the singer/songwriters – hits the spot for music fans young and old. When he stopped by NPR recently for a Tiny Desk Concert, he decided he wanted to do something special with his performance. That is, NPR reported that he and his band arrived a day ahead of time to meet and rehearse with the local Howard Gospel Choir to add another vocal layer to their ensuing performance. Watch these special, rousing renditions of ‘Moments Passed’, ‘An Evening I Would Not Forget’ and ‘Glory’ live from the NPR office in Northeast Washington below. The first two of those songs appeared on the EP ‘Mike Dean Presents: Mike Kennedy’, which dropped in April. To read all of our past coverage on Dermot Kennedy, including a Bands to Watch piece Carrie wrote before SXSW 2018, go here.

Live Gig Video: watch Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile’s Tiny Desk Concert at NPR

While collaborations between two established, beloved stars is nothing new, sometimes the results don’t hit the spot. When Aussie Courtney Barnett decided to join forces with American Kurt Vile, the result was stunning, in the form of album ‘Lotta Sea Lice’. Our Steven reviewed the long player, and you can read his review for TGTF through here. If you’re wondering what the pair are like live, playing off of each other, wonder no more. The two musicians recently showed up at the NPR offices in Washington, DC, to perform one of the public radio station’s now famous Tiny Desk concerts. In the video below, you can watch them perform ‘Over Everything’, ‘Continental Breakfast’, ‘Blue Cheese’ and ‘Let It Go’. Enjoy.

‘Lotta Sea Lice’ is out now on Matador Records. Learn more about the collaborating pair on their Web site. To read TGTF’s past coverage on Courtney Barnett, follow this link.

Live Gig Video: Frank Turner plays ‘Recovery’, The Way I Tend to Be’ and ‘Photosynthesis’ at NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert

One of the great things living in the Nation’s Capital is NPR, our version of the BBC if you will, is based in our area. The best of musical acts that pass through our city are chosen for their Tiny Desk Concert series feature, which is exactly what it sounds like: the acts are situated in a tiny, claustrophobic room and are allowed to let loose to do what they do best, perform. Frank Turner’s turn last month in the room can be viewed below, in which he plays ‘Recovery’ and ‘The Way I Tend to Be’ and ‘Photosynthesis’ turns into a singalong. Watch the session below.

If you’d like to download the audio to this session, the link is provided on NPR’s Web site here.
