Live Gig Video: watch Van Susans perform acoustic version of ‘Seagulls’ for Ont’ Sofa

By on Tuesday, 19th July 2016 at 5:00 pm

Back in April, TGTF favourites Van Susans revealed the promo video for ‘Seagulls’, a tearjerker in the form of a montage of frontman Olly Andrews’ own family home movies. (We profiled it as a previous Video of the Moment back here.) They recently recorded a new live version of the single for Ont’ Sofa, who like Sofar Sounds prefer for their artists to perform in an intimate setting such as a living room, hence their name. In this particular video, Van Susans are playing in Stereo 92, a bar in Stoke Newington, in the northwest part of the London Borough of Hackney. Watch the emotional performance below. Video of the Moment #2056: Van Susans

Okay, get the tissues out now, people. London’s Van Susans have unveiled their newest single, ‘Seagulls’. Its accompanying video is a real tearjerker, as it features the real life home movies, in a montage presentation, from frontman Olly Andrews’ own family. Andrews lost his father 3 years this week, and knowing of his loss, it’s a bittersweet promo to watch. Still, when we lose a loved one, we can take some comfort in the fact that we can remember all the good time we had with the person we loved and lost. We can hold on to those memories long after they are gone and honour their memory forever. Watch the video for the poignant ‘Seagulls’ below.

(TGTF Exclusive!) Video of the Moment #1871: Van Susans

By on Wednesday, 29th July 2015 at 6:00 pm

It’s been a bit since we heard from Bromley’s Van Susans – their debut album ‘Paused in the Moment’ was released in 2012 – but they’ve shared their newest single with me, and I’m pleased to announce we’ve been given the exclusive premiere for its accompanying promo video. The words of the title, ‘Lipstick Teeth’, conjures up images of nights out, when all caution has been thrown to the wind, when unkempt makeup applied to one’s lips goes…erm…awry.

In Van Susans’ story, what started as a one-night stand with an irresistible vixen in a leather jacket has turned into a relationship that frontman Olly Andrews questions when he goes beyond the surface, “between the pet names and the sex”, and he realises discovery what was beyond the superficial wasn’t so great after all. A sign that Van Susans are growing up? Perhaps. Have a watch of the video for ‘Lipstick Teeth’. The single can be pre-ordered now; its release will be in September.

TGTF Holiday Giveaway / WIN a four-album prize pack from Beatnik Geek Records

By on Monday, 9th December 2013 at 3:00 pm

Beatnik Geek Records is an independent record label located 15 miles from London. Formed in 2006, their aim is “to cultivate a self-sustainable business through which artists can release the best records they can possibly produce”. Focusing on bands and individuals who they can work with as a team, Beatnik Geek Records have been very lucky to be working with artists who buy into this methodology and are willing to help the label by working together with them to produce their music, to then give these acts the best possible chance of success.

We’ve featured some of Beatnik Geek’s bands on TGTF, and we were so pleased when they offered to give us the debut albums of four of their acts, Van Susans, Keston Cobblers’ Club, The Lightwings and Melic (pictured at top), so we could in turn give them to a lucky TGTF reader. Whoever wins this treasure trove of four albums will have plenty of music to entertain them and their loved ones during this holiday season and for days to come. To give you a bit more information on the bands and their releases:

Van Susans‘Paused in the Moment’
The Bromley band’s debut was released in 2012, but we recently gave away their latest single, which was a reworked version of the album track ‘Served Cold’. This year the band supported Little Comets at a charity gig in Manchester and played festivals such as Lounge on the Farm, Crystal Palace Garden Party, Victorious in Portsmouth and Galtres Parklands Festival.

Keston Cobblers’ Club‘One, for Words’
Their debut was released in 2012, but they haven’t stopped moving since, having graced Glasto, Green Man and Larmer Tree festivals and also made radio appearances with Bob Harris on Radio 2 and Steve Lamacq on 6music. In June 2013, they released the ‘A Scene of Plenty’ EP.

The Lightwings – ‘Sleeping is Not for Dreamers’
Their debut came out this year but songs from it have already been nicked for the Louise Brealey indie film already making the film festival rounds, Delicious.

Melic – ‘An Hour to Anywhere’
Our Ben caught the band at their launch party for their debut album back in the summer. Despite being a relatively new band in town, they’ve already played high-profile shows at London Koko and Islington Academy, as well as International Pop Overthrow Liverpool, Cornbury, and Southern Sounds festivals.

Want to win? Fill out the contest form below with your full name and your email address. Next, we want to be sure you’re not a robot, so correctly answer this question: what country do Melic originally hail from? Get your entries in by noon British time on Thursday the 12th of December. We’ll choose a winner from all the correct entries received then. Good luck! Please note: this contest is open to UK residents only, as the prize will be posted. To make this fair for everyone, all duplicate entries will be discarded.

This contest is now closed. The winner will be contacted by email.

Video of the Moment #1392: Van Susans

By on Monday, 25th November 2013 at 6:00 pm

Van Susans have a new single out, ‘Served Cold’. It’s a lusher reworking of a track from the band’s 2012 debut ‘Paused in the Moment’, and we offered the song up as a free download last week as this MP3 of the Day. The performance promo vid was filmed at the now gone but not forgotten Islington Rattlesnake back in April. Watch it below.

Bromley, South London band Van Susans have recorded a new version of their track ‘Served Cold’, first having appeared on their 2012 debut album ‘Paused in the Moment’. They’ll be releasing a promo video to go along with the new version of the song next week, but ahead of that, they want you to have a free copy of the newer, richer- and fuller-sounding ‘Served Cold’. You can get it from their Bandcamp.
