Video of the Moment #1885: Youth Lagoon

By on Friday, 14th August 2015 at 6:00 pm

Youth Lagoon, better known to his mum as Trevor Powers, has a new promo now for ‘Highway Patrol Stun Gun’, a new teaser from his upcoming album ‘Savage Hills Ballroom’ out at the end of September. Despite the violent-sounding song title, it’s a pretty placid sounding track. The video, however, is a little creepy, owing to Powers’ tuxedoed buddy throughout the video who has a gold mask and therefore his expressions don’t change (of course). Don’t dismiss the lyrics either, as they’re Powers’ way of expressing his thoughts about police brutality in America (read them below, as cut and pasted from the YouTube description):

possessed by something in the wind. they watch me like i’m a threat to them. with implants deep below their skin, they laugh ’cause some refuse a PIN.

**sounds like a riot choking the highway. with stun guns, smoke, and sirens on display.

remember when no one danced the same. we all had a voice. we had a name. we’re gold that’s as bright as hell’s own flame. forgive me, for i have lost my way.

dripping in blood, waiting for Your return. in repetition hall of the nocturne. where we’re going to, you can’t bring all your worth.
oh raise me up, oh raise me from the dirt. each second is a high point of concern. where we’re going to, you can’t bring all your worth.

Watch the video for ‘Highway Patrol Stun Gun’ below. ‘Savage Hills Ballroom’, on which this song will appear, will be released on the 25th of October on Fat Possum Records. Past coverage of Youth Lagoon on TGTF is this way.

Trevor Powers, better known to the world by his stage name Youth Lagoon, has a new video out for ‘Raspberry Cane’. Directed by Stephen McNally, the slow moving animation fits the languid nature of the track, which appears on Powers’ current album ‘Wondrous Bughouse’ released earlier this year. Watch it below.

Video of the Moment #673: Youth Lagoon

Youth Lagoon has a new video out for the song ‘July’. Even though we’re at the furthest time possible from that month, it should conjure up sunnier, fuzzier summer days on bicycles and happy couples driving around in Volvos. At least I think that’s what the video is trying to show us…ehh, maybe not…

Ellie wrote about Trevor Powers in this earlier Bands to Watch.
